F-35 production rate will quadruple by 2019

F-35 production is slated to hit full steam in 2019, and Lockheed Martin is reshaping its final assembly line to get ready. Earlier plans called for full production by now, but that was delayed by problems that ultimately added billions of dollars to the cost. But now, production is poised to explode. This year, Lockheed will build 53 F-35s here and at another assembly facility in Italy, pushing the worldwide total past 200. That’s more than the Air Force has F-22 Raptors.

Lockheed and its partners are eyeing new manufacturing techniques that they hope could trim $10 million from each plane’s price tag, bringing it to $80 million by 2019. (The Pentagon says each one currently costs $100 million.) Collectively, Lockheed, Northrop and BAE have invested $132 million to help reduce the cost of the planes, Rein said.

For example, Lockheed is experimenting with a new way to drill the F-35’s wings. Currently, water and oil are used to cool a robotic drill bit so it doesn’t overheat and break. It’s a messy process, with fluid dripping down each wing. The new way uses cryogenic machining — essentially, freezing the drill bit beforehand instead of cooling it as it goes, Rein said. The company spent $119,000 testing the process, which it says will save $400,000 per jet, saving $12 million over the life of the program.

China's 1400 megawatt nuclear reactor design passes international safety review

China's CAP1400 reactor design has successfully passed the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA's) Generic Reactor Safety Review (GRSR).

The CAP1400 is an enlarged version of the AP1000 pressurized water reactor developed from the Westinghouse original by SNPTC with consulting input from the Toshiba-owned company. As one of China's 16 strategic projects under its National Science and Technology Development Plan, the CAP1400 is intended to be deployed in large numbers across the country. The reactor design may also be exported.

International use of the CAP1400 is still dependent on meeting country-specific standards and requirements, but passing the IAEA safety review will make this process easier.

In September 2014, the Chinese nuclear regulator approved the preliminary safety analysis report of the CAP1400 reactor design following a 17-month review. The National Nuclear Safety Administration's safety review involved more than 260 experts, 30 meetings to discuss it and responding to more than 5000 questions, according to SNPTC. As a result of the review, more than 1000 work orders were drawn up.

Site preparation is already underway for two demonstration CAP1400 units at Huaneng Group's Shidaowan site in Shandong province. The pouring of first concrete is expected to take place soon.

Scott Fregonese is an urban planner from Portland who flies to Dallas every few weeks to participate in some of the longest meetings I’ve ever attended. On Tuesday, I was this close to calling the FBI’s Crisis Negotiation Unit to report a hostage situation at the Walnut Hill Recreation Center.

Fregonese has been tasked with planning the future for 1,630 affluent acres in Preston Hollow. That includes the condos and apartments along Northwest Highway heading east toward Hillcrest. But, really, we’re talking about Preston Center, the 56-plus-year-old shopping center at Preston Road and Northwest Highway where as a kid I used to get my clothes (at the Sanger-Harris), buy my books (at Taylor’s) and eat my lunch (at the Woolworth’s counter) while Mom browsed Goodies from Goodman. Just typing all those dead names makes me feel way older than my 47 years.

Fregonese said Tuesday night there’s finally a vision: “to create a mixed-use district in Preston Hollow for the neighborhood and the surrounding neighborhoods.” It took many months and many meetings to get there, he said — way too long. “That should have started at the front, but we’re getting there now.”

A cooking school. A film center. A green space larger than Klyde Warren Park on what’s now a parking lot, with a “water fountain tunnel” to match. A playground. Outdoor basketball courts, indoor volleyball courts. A partnership with the Dallas Independent School District. A year-round midway.

In other words: “a world-class park,” which may well be Dallas’ most well-worn catchphrase.

That’s what former Hunt Oil-man Walt Humann says he wants in Fair Park, part of his “vision” for the 277 acres of city property that sit vacant and idle most days of the year. “The park belongs to everyone,” said Humann, when speaking Thursday to the Park and Recreation Board at City Hall.

But right now, Fair Park belongs to the city — and it will stay that way for the foreseeable future.

As recently as a month ago, Humann hoped the City Council would hand over the keys to his proposed nonprofit, the Fair Park Texas Foundation, at its May 25 meeting. He’d been pushing for a ceremonial contract signing on June 6, which marks the 80th anniversary of the start of the Texas Centennial Exposition, the world’s fair responsible for the George Dahl-designed buildings that are deteriorating all over the Fair Park grounds.

But that date will come and go without a vote. Mayor Mike Rawlings’ office said Thursday that it’s not likely to reach the horseshoe before summer.

I started out with my dreads like this & then dreaded more until it was almost my whole head except the very top, now I am getting closer to this look again.. I like that it is just easier for me to maintain, and blow dry :) .. love your dreads, and treat them well <3

Two Houses at Nichada / Alkhemist Architects

The site of two houses at Nichada Village is located in a suburban gated community in Bangkok, Thailand, where the land plot is very tight for two houses.  The houses belong to two brothers, who are very close, yet, have a different lifestyle. They wish to live close to each other and spend some time together.  However, they also wish to establish a private distance when they need. The architect initially began the design process by using one simple building typology and repeat it on both houses. However, once this design development get into the detail level the logic of repetition has evolved to response to a difference need of two different individual.  As a result, these two houses at Nichada do look appropriately similar on the first glance, yet they can contain their own specific atmosphere once we dwell within them.

DARPA awards contracts to develop smarter, faster unmanned and manned armored vehicles

Today’s ground-based armored fighting vehicles are better protected than ever, but face a constantly evolving threat: weapons increasingly effective at piercing armor. While adding more armor has provided incremental increases in protection, it has also hobbled vehicle speed and mobility and ballooned development and deployment costs. To help reverse this trend, DARPA’s Ground X-Vehicle Technology (GXV-T) program recently awarded contracts to eight organizations.

“We’re exploring a variety of potentially groundbreaking technologies, all of which are designed to improve vehicle mobility, vehicle survivability and crew safety and performance without piling on armor,” said Maj. Christopher Orlowski, DARPA program manager. “DARPA’s performers for GXV-T are helping defy the ‘more armor equals better protection’ axiom that has constrained armored ground vehicle design for the past 100 years, and are paving the way toward innovative, disruptive vehicles for the 21st Century and beyond.”

DARPA has awarded contracts for GXV-T to the following organizations:

  • Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, Pa.)
  • Honeywell International Inc. (Phoenix, Ariz.)
  • Leidos (San Diego, Calif.)
  • Pratt and Miller (New Hudson, Mich.)
  • QinetiQ Inc. (QinetiQ UK, Farnborough, United Kingdom)
  • Raytheon BBN (Cambridge, Mass.)
  • Southwest Research Institute (San Antonio, Tex.)
  • SRI International (Menlo Park, Calif.)

GXV-T is pursuing research in the following four technical areas:


  • Radically Enhanced Mobility—Ability to traverse diverse off-road terrain, including slopes and various elevations. Capabilities of interest include revolutionary wheel/track and suspension technologies that would enable greater terrain access and faster travel both on- and off-road compared to existing ground vehicles.
  • Survivability through Agility—Autonomously avoid incoming threats without harming occupants through technologies that enable, for example, agile motion and active repositioning of armor. Capabilities of interest include vertical and horizontal movement of armor to defeat incoming threats in real time.
  • Crew Augmentation—Improved physical and electronically assisted situational awareness for crew and passengers; semi-autonomous driver assistance and automation of key crew functions similar to capabilities found in modern commercial airplane cockpits. Capabilities of interest include high-resolution, 360-degree visualization of data from multiple onboard sensors and technologies to support closed-cockpit vehicle operations.
  • Signature Management—Reduction of detectable signatures, including visible, infrared (IR), acoustic and electromagnetic (EM). Capabilities of interest include improved ways to avoid detection and engagement by adversaries.

DARPA funds $146 million for spaceplane demonstrator

DARPA’s Experimental Spaceplane-1 (XS-1) has been gearing up its own development program, which in some ways is even more impressive than the big launchers.

DARPA has asked the aerospace industry to design a small, first-stage rocket that can launch into space, deploy another stage with 3,000 to 5,000 pounds of payload attached, then return to land on a runway and be ready to do it all over again the next day—ten days in a row. That’s much more often than any of the bigger rockets launch, none of which have actually achieved reusability yet. XS-1, as DARPA calls the experimental vehicle, won’t have time for extensive refurbishment. It should essentially be able to refuel and re-fly, like an airplane. And it should do it for $5 million per flight, around a tenth of the cost of a current launch

DARPA is putting up $146 million for Phase II of the project—building and flying an actual demonstrator

In 2014 for phase I, three teams were selected to do advanced design work on the XS-1: Boeing/Blue Origin, Northrop Grumman/Virgin Galactic/Scaled Composites, and XCOR/Masten were all funded to develop their concepts.

UAE performing design study of artificial mountain to increase rainfall

The UAE is currently in the first stage of a man-made mountain development project as the country mulls different approaches to maximizing rainfall.

Experts from the US-based University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), which manages the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) are in the “detailed modeling study” phase, NCAR scientist and lead researcher Roelof Bruintjes told Arabian Business.

The presence of mountains forces air to rise, creating clouds that can then be seeded, Bruintjes said.
Cloud seeding, a weather modification process designed to increase the amount of rainfall produced from clouds, has a permanent unit at the NCMS’s meteorological department, which conducts operations across the UAE.

The department recently revealed $558,000 was spent on UAE cloud-seeding last year.

“Building a mountain is not a simple thing,” added Bruintjes. “We are still busy finalizing assimilation, so we are doing a spread of all kinds of heights, widths and locations [as we simultaneously] look at the local climatology.”


One proposal to build a 1.2-mile-high mountain in the notoriously flat Netherlands was found to be feasible if the mountain were hollow. Estimates for the cost went as high as $230 billion.

Bolonkin's idea is creating a cheap range of inflatable ‘mountains’ (really immense gasbags) from a thin film whose presence forces humid air (a wet wind) to rise to high altitude. It is well known that air expands and cools at altitude. The air humidity decreases, exceeds the maximal saturation level and superfluous water vapor condenses in various forms, including rain or rain clouds.

The top of the gasbags’ film is located at an altitude of ~3 - 5 km. It is supported at this altitude by a small additional air pressure produced by ground ventilators. The film is connected to Earth's ground by controlled cables, which allow some change in the height and orientation of the artificial mountain(s). The gasbag’s external surface may require double-layer film. We can control the heat conductivity of the dome cover by pumping an air between two layers of the dome cover and change the solar heating (solar radiation) by control of cover clarity or pumping a warm air between layers if icing-over or show is at the dome top. That allows selecting for different conditions (solar heating) in the covered area and by pumping air into the dome.

The building of a film dome is very easy. The collapsed film is spread out over Earth’s surface, turn on the pumping propellers and the film is raised by air overpressure to the needed altitude limited by the support cables. Damage to the film is not a major trouble because the additional air pressure is very small (0.005 - 0.05 atm) and air leakage is compensated for by the air impellers.
