Dallas City Council weighs the good, bad and very ugly (streets) in new citizen survey

On the very day A.C. Gonzalez was scheduled to receive a closed-door review from the City Council, the lame-duck city manager had the council briefed on the results of the latest — and, to date, greatest — City of Dallas Community Survey, which says, in short, that people really like living and working in Dallas. In fact, said Jason Murado of ETC Institute, which compiled the survey, “there is nothing that would make people not want to live here.”

And several council members made it very clear they believe Gonzalez and his staff had a hand in that.

Speaking directly to Gonzalez, who said Monday he intends to leave in January, council member Casey Thomas said the survey’s positive results “start at the top.” He then referred to a comment made earlier this week by his colleague Philip Kingston, who said upon Gonzalez’s resignation announcement that “the city of Dallas in many ways is succeeding in spite of City Hall.”

“I don’t believe that,” Thomas said. “Credit where credit is due.”

And on it went, with several council members, as well as Mayor Mike Rawlings, thanking the city manager and staff after Murado’s glowing presentation based on the answers of 1,512 randomly selected people. The attaboys culminated with council member Sandy Greyson’s brief but emotional remarks.

“In spite of the never-ending whining and complaining by several colleagues, the average citizen thinks the city is doing well,” she said. “A.C., thank you for that.”

Several council members applauded; city staffers, too.

“I, for one, will be sorry to see you go,” Greyson said, her voice cracking. Gonzalez looked ready to cry. … [visit site to read more]
