On the race track, the Mercedes Benz 300SL is a symbol of invincibility. After all this was it’s intended function, to solely revive the Daimler Benz name in competition racing. On the road, the 300SL is without a doubt one of the most desirable automobiles ever produced. However, being built for racing, the body was designed for aerodynamic efficiency and as a result, it featured flattered flanks, next to no trim, and had little thought given to its front end. Mercedes Benz had no intention in building a road going version of their famous racecar, that was until a New Yorker named Max Hoffman put in an order for 1000 vehicles and with the signing of that order - the road going version of the 300SL was born. The first road cars to be sold in 1954 had a sticker price of $6,820 and had risen to $8,902 by the end of the production run in 1963. Fast forward 50 years and you’ll be severely embarrassed expecting change from a million. #meandmybentley
