Ginger Armadillo Costumes has an epic Teen Titans Raven costume that recently came across my radar. She says she always strives to bring details, textures, and realistic elements to the costumes even if they are comic book-y and therefore a little cartoonish. I think she nailed it with the Raven ensemble. She drafted the pattern for Raven’s leotard and mde it using black and slate blue pleather. The cloak came together with three layers of navy blue chiffon. And she cast the gems, too! She says:
All gems were cast from resin, mixed with cellophane glitter. The gem settings were cut from sheet brass and attached to parts of a recycled belt.
In a how-to on the Ginger Armadillo website, she said she used EasyCast Clear Casting Epoxy for the gems. She used existing silicone molds and also made her own to the facets on Raven’s gems just right. To add the right amount of shimmer, she added glitter flakes:
For Raven’s gems, I really wanted to add a little something extra, since dark red isn’t very visually interesting. It doesn’t really pop the way neon green does. I bought a beautiful resin brooch for my Snow White costume, which had moonstone fragments inside. It caught the light in a really nice way, and I wanted to replicate that. I settled on using cellophane glitter flakes–nice, big ones–in pink.
