With a single, simple vote of the Dallas City Council, Wednesday marked the official beginning of the end of Valley View Center.

Come year’s end, said developer Scott Beck afterward, the wrecking balls and excavators will begin erasing the once-thriving mall built in 1973 at the corner of LBJ Freeway and Preston Road. The demolition will take six months, and by the end of it only the Sears store will remain. The rest of Valley View — including the old Sanger-Harris storefront — will disappear.

“It’s bittersweet,” said Beck, who, with his family, bought much of Valley View in 2012. “I remember riding my bike to Valley View as a kid.”

In its place will be the long-promised Dallas Midtown development, which will be about 900,000 square feet and cost around $290 million. A portion of that price tag will one day be covered by the $36 million approved by the council Wednesday, money that will come from the Mall Area Redevelopment TIF created in 2014 to revive both Valley View and the once-and-future Red Bird Mall.
