How to Help Your Posture With a Simple Tech Shirt #WearableWednesday @Pauline_Dongen

Wearable Tech Posture Shirt

Designer Pauline van Dongen has created another piece of wearable tech, this time working on the issue of posture, according to a post in dezeen. If you are best friends with a computer, you know all about aching shoulders, lower back pain and a cramped neck. All of these things usually stem from poor posture, but it’s hard to remember to maintain a straight back throughout the day. So, this undershirt, FysioPal, has built in sensors that measure positions in all of those trouble zones, alerting the wearer with a vibration when a slouch is happening. Interestingly, one of the partners for the project was Elitac, which specializes in haptic wearables. The information gathered by the shirt is nicely visualized through a phone app, allowing a better understanding of alignment issues, with the ability to track over time.

Something which differentiates this shirt from other tech posture devices is the fact that the electronics have been laminated within the fabric, thanks to special process by Schoeller. That means nice stretch fabric with no uncomfortable wires. Designers are realizing that people aren’t willing to compromise on comfort and they also need versatility. So, we are seeing more embedded electronics and tech friendly fibers and textiles. Focusing on base layer clothing makes sense, because it allows the wearer to have one piece that works for most outfits.

If you want to work on creating your own Arduino posture shirt, you should take a look at our flex sensors. We have them in two lengths, and you can check out this tutorial on their distant cousin, the Force Sensitive Resistors (FSR). Maybe start with just one position on your back and see what you can accomplish. Make sure to post your work on our forum so we can see what you’ve done. Hey, are you slouching right now??
